Has Pokie Spend Peaked?

The Centre for Economic Studies says demand for poker machines in South Australia appears to have peaked. This is interesting news as the eagerly-awaited report hasn’t shown any unusual results, despite many experts saying pokies revenue would fall.

It has released a gambling database to give annual information on the number of gaming machines, venues, gambling expenditure and tax revenue for South Australian local government areas. Senior researcher Anthony Kosturjak says the centre has taken data from the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner’s office and put it into a user-friendly format to measure poker machine trends over time.

“One of the interesting things is that it does seem adult expenditure across most regions has stopped rising now in about 2005, so it looks like, I suppose, the market has saturated and reached maturity,” he said.
