$1 Cap for Pub Pokies?!

Nick Xenophen will be introducing a private senator’s bill when the Senate resumes next week, backing up the recommendation as made by the Productivity Commission yesterday.

The Government has been told to adopt a raft of strategies to reduce problem gambling, including a $1 per bet limit on pokies. It would reduce the maximum hourly spend of $1200 to $120.

“(It) is still a lot of money to most people but this is an interim measure recommended by the commission and I believe it is a good step in the right direction,” Senator Xenophon said. “This move won’t impact on people who occasionally gamble on poker machines but it will go a long way in beginning to protect people who are addicted to poker machine gambling.”

Senator Xenophon urged for bipartisan support for the measure which he said could be easily and readily adopted.
